Chapter 2 — Origins

The Mandela Era

On 11 February 1990, Nelson Mandela walked free from Victor Verster Prison. South Africa began its transformation. That same year, Natal Rugby won their first ever Currie Cup — a watershed for KwaZulu-Natal rugby. Across the mountains, Western Province had ruled for decades. What followed was 35 years of rivalry that mirrors South Africa's own evolution.

Key Milestones
1990
Natal win first Currie Cup — Year of Mandela's release. The WP dynasty faces its first serious challenge.
1992
Natal back-to-back CC titles — The Durban powerhouse asserts itself in the new era.
1995
Rugby World Cup — Natal's Andre Joubert stars. WP's Francois Pienaar lifts the Webb Ellis Cup. Both unions power a historic victory.
1996
Professional era begins — Super Rugby launches. Natal (Sharks) and WP (Stormers) enter as founding franchises. Sharks reach the inaugural Super 12 final.
1997
WP win first pro-era CC title — Harry Viljoen's side establishes the new Stormers dynasty. The rivalry goes fully professional.
2000–2001
WP win back-to-back Currie Cups — Including beating Sharks in two consecutive CC finals at Kings Park and Newlands.
2022
Stormers win inaugural URC — First cross-border title for either side. The great prize that eluded both in Super Rugby finally delivered.
2024
Sharks win EPCR Challenge Cup — First major European title for a South African franchise. Kolisi, Etzebeth era dawns at Kings Park.

Chapter 7 — Modern Era (2021–Present)

The URC Chapter

The United Rugby Championship reshaped South African rugby. The Stormers immediately dominated — winning the inaugural URC title in 2022 and reaching back-to-back finals. The Sharks counter-punched with the EPCR Challenge Cup in 2024 and SA Shield in 2025. The URC crown remains elusive for Durban, but 2024–25 is their best finish yet (3rd).

Chapter 9 — Facts Only

The Verdict

Currie Cup (Since 1990)
Sharks
9 titles vs 6. Won four in the 1990s alone. The most dominant CC province of the post-isolation era.
Super Rugby (1996–2020)
Sharks
4 finals vs 1. Neither won the title, but Sharks were runners-up four times. Avg position: Sharks 5.8, Stormers 6.8.
URC Era (2021–present)
Stormers
1 URC title, 2 finals. Won the inaugural URC in 2022. Avg position: Stormers 3.5, Sharks 6.3.
Springbok Factory
Stormers / WP
~85 Boks produced vs ~65 for Sharks since 1990. WP historically SA's most productive union — but Sharks' current squad is their most Bok-loaded ever.

Overall trophy count since 1990: Sharks lead 10–7. They won more eras (5 vs 2), reached more professional finals (4 SR + 0 URC vs 1 SR + 2 URC), and have dominated the Currie Cup in the modern era (9 vs 6 titles).

The Stormers hold the single biggest achievement — the URC 2022 title is the only cross-border championship won by either team. They lead the CC finals H2H 3–2 and have produced more Springboks historically.

On balance of evidence: Sharks are the more consistent and prolific trophy winners across 35 years. Stormers delivered the highest single peak. Both remain without a Super Rugby title — the great prize that eluded them both.
